Wigtownshire hosted Oban this week and were optimistic, having already beaten them away from home this season.
From the kick-off it was Shire who dominated forcing their way into Oban’s 22-yard area where they were awarded a penalty. A quick tap and go by Jason McKie and backed up by Adam Paxton the duo forced their way over the line for an early try. The conversion was missed.
Oban, not wanting to be out done scored their own first try bullying their way up the middle of the pitch and over the line. Their conversion was also missed.
Shire were soon back into Oban’s half and once again were awarded a penalty just outside the 22-yard area. This time the option to kick for the posts was taken and Robbie Forsyth slotted it in to take their points tally to 8.
Once again, the visitors kicked off and it was brought straight back into their half by Shire for a few minutes Oban held Shire at bay but with a penalty advantage to Shire the ball was passed through the hand of the backs to Full-back Hamish McGeoch who dodged passed 5 defenders to dive over the line for one of his trademark tries. This time the conversion was made by Robbie Forsyth, and this took the score to 15 points to 5.
A short time later Shire were awarded a second kickable penalty which was once again made by Robbie Forsyth increasing Shire’s lead to 18 points to 5.
Within minutes Shire scored again when Jason McKie slipped pasted the defence and sprinted 20 yards to score under the posts for his second try off the game and Shire’s third. Robbie Forsyth made the easy conversion and Shire were now 25 points to 5.
With minutes to go in the first half Shire were once again on the attack but a clearance kick from Oban took the ball back into Shire’s half and a fumbled ball by Shire allowed them to run the ball up the right wing and over the line for their second try. The conversion was made and at half-time Shire were leading by 25 points to 12.
The second half was a lot closer and both teams played some good rugby. Unfortunately, for Oban the only points scored in the second half were conceded by them. Shire scoring their bonus point try when Oban had a scrum just outside their own 22-yard line. From there they were forced over the touch line for a lineout to Shire. The ball made its way over to the left-hand side where it was taken by Neil Irving for 20 yards to within 2 yards of the try line there, he drew in the defence and passed to John Dalrymple on the wing. Dalrymple flung himself over the line for a great try. The final conversion was missed. Shire finished the game 30 points to 12.
Man of the Match this week was the Captain Gregor Henry who played a blinder with some crunching tackles and good attacking play. Well done, Gregor.
Shire are back in action at home again in 3 weeks the 26th when they play Uddingston RFC.
