Match report Wigtownshire RFC v Irvine RFC 21.09.24

Wigtownshire RFC senior men's team delivered another outstanding performance to maintain their unbeaten record in the Arnold Clarks West Regional League 2 with a commanding 65-19 victory over Irvine. This was Wigtownshire’s third consecutive home game, and with summer finally arriving on a sunny day that also coincided with Ladies’ Day at the clubhouse, the home fans were treated to a feast of rugby.

### First Half:
The match began with Irvine seizing an early advantage, stealing a Wigtownshire lineout before powering through with a forward drive and a clinical pick-and-go to score the opening converted try. Wigtownshire found themselves 0-7 down, but they quickly responded from the restart. Giant lock Flynn Crean leaped high to claim the ball, and after it was recycled to the blindside, fellow Kiwi Ricky Hopcroft powered over the try line. Unfortunately, the conversion was missed, leaving the score at 5-7.

Wigtownshire continued to apply pressure and soon took the lead. A well-executed move by the backline saw quick hands free up fullback Neil Forsyth, who scored and converted his own try to put the home side up 12-7.

Prop Ian Allan, known locally as the "Mayor of Colmonell," then put on a show, displaying center-like agility as he sidestepped defenders to score under the posts. Forsyth added the extras, extending the lead to 19-7. Wigtownshire’s dominance continued when Kieran Smith bulldozed through the Irvine defence, setting up Gregor Henry to score a well-worked try, although the conversion was missed, making it 24-7.

Five minutes later, a slick exchange between Ricky Hopcroft, Neil Forsyth, and Scott Forsyth led to Scott touching down in the corner, increasing the margin to 29-7. Irvine’s struggles were compounded when a penalty kick failed to find touch, allowing Gregor Henry to launch an attack that resulted in Hopcroft’s second try just before halftime. Wigtownshire went into the break with a commanding 34-7 lead.

### Second Half:
The second half picked up where the first left off, with Irvine’s clearance kick falling short and Wigtownshire’s backs once again using quick hands to release Gregor Henry for his second try of the match, pushing the score to 39-7.

Angus McClymont then made a surging run down the left wing, linking up brilliantly with Andrew McMillan before finishing the move himself for his first senior try, converted by Scott Forsyth to make it 46-7.

A passage of "kick tennis" ended when Neil Forsyth collected a high ball inside his own 22, chipped over the defence, and gathered the bouncing ball to race through for a stunning solo effort, with Scott Forsyth converting to stretch the lead to 53-7.

The "Mayor" Ian Allan and Mark Pirrie both made storming runs, and scrum-half Frank Gwynne capitalized on the momentum to score, extending the scoreline to 58-7.

Wigtownshire briefly went down to 14 men when Gregor Henry was shown a yellow card for repeated team infractions, and Irvine took advantage of their numerical superiority to score a forward-driven try, closing the gap to 58-14. However, Wigtownshire hit back with a try of their own, winning a scrum against the head before Kieran Smith set up James McGarvie to dive over under the posts. Scott Forsyth added the conversion for a 65-14 lead.

Irvine managed a late consolation try with another powerful forward drive, leaving the final score at 65-19.

### Post-Match Comments:
Coach John Dalrymple was pleased with the team's performance, saying, *“Another satisfying performance in attack, and despite a couple of lapses in concentration, we controlled the game throughout. This result puts us in a good position heading into a tough away fixture next weekend.”*

Prop Ian Allan was named Leswalt Village Store Man of the Match for his outstanding play both in the tight and the loose.

With this victory, Wigtownshire remains unbeaten in their first four league games. They now look ahead to a challenging away game against league leaders Strathendrick next weekend.
